One day, when I was living in Te Atatu South, a lady came to my house with a box of things that had belonged to her father. She was generous and fascinating, the kind of person who carries stories with her. Inside the box was this photograph, along with many others.
Her father had been an architect, already in his early nineties, and she wanted his things to go to someone who would appreciate them. She gave me his plans for National Women’s, his old compass set, and these theater photographs — fragments of a life I never knew, passed gently into mine.
I had some photos of Sir Anthony Hopkins in his early theater days dressed as a woman. The photo above has handwritten pencil “Anthony Hopkins” in pencil. This I would estimate was taken a few years after the originals that I had.
